Buying Lavender Helps Local Farmers succeed
(PRWEB) June 11, 2005
Sequim, Washington (Pronounced sk-wim) Sequim is one of the most beautiful places in America, and, because of that, its agricultural way of life has been threatened by expanding population and development. The answer is lavender. This is the story of how a group of small farms got together to grow and brand lavender to save farmland and an agricultural way of life.
Sequims majestic setting at the sheltered end of the Olympic Peninsula provides abundant sunshine, fertile soil, and a mild maritime climate – perfect conditions for growing intensely aromatic and vibrantly colored lavenders of all types. Its the soil that were trying to keep, said Tom Mix, one of the founders of the Sequim Growers Cooperative (SGC). We want to encourage people to buy farms and create farms and grow lavender.
It is not merely lavender that is grown in the Sequim and Dungeness Valley; it is arguably the finest lavender in the world. The Sequim Growers Cooperative was founded to produce high quality lavender products while preserving agricultural heritage, said Marie Barnett, SGCs Marketing and Sales Director. Small farms and new farms needed a way to market products together, not to compete against each other. We could have competed with each other right out of our way of life. The cooperative and its website give us a chance to reach out to the general public with our products. People can learn about us, buy wonderful lavender products and support our cause which is to keep agricultural land farm land and to provide superior products.
The cooperative provides a website for people all over the country to purchase lavender and lavender products (http://www.sequimgrowers.com). Sequim Lavender is lovingly grown on small farms, said Nancy Radich, owner of Rocking N Ranch and member of SGC. Products from the members of SGC can not only be found on the website but locally at the Port Townsend and Poulsbo Farmers Markets. Barnett is taking orders from retailers who wish to carry SGC fresh lavender bundles during Fresh Lavender Season. She is also responsible for the outreach across Washington State and the nation.
For thousands of years, lavender has been the sweetly satisfying scent of summer, explained Barnett. The spiky-stemmed lavender, with square-shaped blossoms and distinctive fragrance is a delight to your senses. You will find all Sequim Growers Cooperative quality lavender products to be distinctive and enchanting. Visitors to the SGC secure online store will find unique lavender gifts, sachets, oils, home products, buds, bundles and more all produced by its 19 farmers and growing. In addition, the wholesale area offers bulk pricing and large order discounts are offered by calling Barnett directly.
The Sequim Quality Seal is your assurance of quality and the commitment that we will provide lasting satisfaction, explained Barnett. The Sequim Growers Cooperative is a 501(c)6 nonprofit. Our commitment is to provide the finest quality lavender so our farmers can maintain their agricultural quality of life. We are also committed to seeing that the town of Sequim and its surrounding area does not completely lose its amazing fertile soil. We are asking consumers everywhere to help us in this by purchasing products off our website.
Those interested in learning more about the Sequim Growers Cooperative can visit its website at http://www.sequimgrowers.com. The Sequim Growers Cooperative is a producers co-op dedicated to producing the very highest quality lavender products while preserving agricultural heritage. New Kind of TV Station Shows Movies Commercial Free Reaches Viewers Direct from Space (All Over North America, the Internet and television stations)
Lake Oswego, OR (PRWEB) January 8, 2007
New Kind of Television Station originates from Space via Portland, Oregon, White Springs, Florida.
Here’s a Television Station that broadcasts via satellite directly to viewers homes and charges no subscription fee. The format is comprised of an eclectic mix of movies presented without commercial interruptions. Victor Ives, veteran Oregon broadcaster, who started the channel, said, “Oh, it would be un-American not to run commercials we do run advertising, but following the movie in sort of a European style.”
White Springs TV, as it is called, runs commercials between movies and clustered among cartoons, short subjects and interactive content. The station claims coverage of Canada, USA, Mexico and part of Central America. Almost anyone in the Portland area could get the signal with a small dish and KU Band digital receiver costing under $ 125.00. “We have no idea how many of the few million homes with small dishes and receivers are watching, but we have been broadcasting a year now and seeing a growth in response.
FTA (Free To Air) viewers have about 80 space channels to watch free. Several have ethnic or religious programming, but PBS some sports fracnhises and a couple of the alphabet networks have joined in.
Now expanding WSTV into a Network. (Over-the-air and on the Internet.)
Over the past few months channel has grown the channel to include TV stations and cable systems of various sizes (UHF, VHF, Low Power, Full Power and Mutlicast) from outlets in San Diego and two in the San Fernando Valley of California, Presque, Maine, Lynchburg-Roanoke, Virginia, Orlando, Florida, Wichita, Kansas, three towns in Alabama, one Washington State, one in South Carolina, two in Nevada and a cable system as far away as Guatamela. “We celebrate every new affiliate equally, be it the tiny towns of Pahrump, Nevada and Sequim, Washington or Los Angeles.” Ives says. Channel 9 in Brookings, Oregon has contracted to start carrying WSTRV 70 hours per week. Some of the programming will be seen in the Salem area on locally owned Channel 52 and in Portland on Comcast Cable Channel 14 starting in the New Year.
Movie Mix
“About one out of five films scheduled is a Made-For-TV Movie mostly from the 70′s, 80′s. Ives says, “An old ABC Movie of the week, is a lot more enjoyable when it isn’t interrupted by commercials for abdominal machines or patent medicines”, Ives said.
So far, the biggest viewer response is from classic and not so classic movies from the early days of Hollywood including the so called “Poverty Row” studios. Fortunate for us, some the poorer studios were sloppy on copyright renewals and we have gathered hundreds of them as well as the titles from mainline studio and the producers who made films for ABC, CBS, NBC.” Ives said.
Victor Ives has been haunting Portland media going back to the 70′s when he and Jimmy Hollister hosted Sinister Cinema a late night phenomena which brought KATU Channel 2 as high as a 60 share of the audience. In the mid 90′s, Ives founded and managed KWBP TV Channel 32 which was first affiliated with and then sold to Warner Bros.. WB 32 was launched with a non commercial Movie Marathon which was a sign on “stunt” but the movies without commercial interruption is a permanent part of the new White Springs TV Format. The White Springs TV weekly schedule is online at http://www.whitesprings.TV.
Why White Springs?
The name White Springs TV comes from the name of a small town on the Suawanee River in Florida. That’s where Ives and his Portland area partners purchased a satellite uplink that beams the programming content created in Portland 22,5000 miles into space then back to earth. The white Springs Satellite up link also distributes TalkStar Radio Network that provides radio programming to individual users via radio stations in the US and Canada and to satellite and internet listeners via audio streaming. See http://www.whitesprings.TV for Television information and http://www.TalkStarRadio.com for the Radio Network from the same satellite.

Car Hire Greece – What to see & do!
Article by Mairead Foley
If you’re thinking about visiting Greece on your next holiday then there’s only one way to explore it – by car. Check out the buzzing metropolis of Athens, the laid back Greek villages, some spectacular islands (of which there are about 1,400!) and a dramatic coastline dotted with little villages and pristine beaches. This country also boasts a Mediterranean climate, delicious cuisine and some wonderful historical sights making it the perfect holiday destination.
Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the world’s oldest cities, so it’s rich in culture, heritage and history. Surrounded by three mountains, Athens is now a sprawling modern city which is dotted with some of the world’s most spectacular historic features and lots of Roman and Byzantine attractions. It has one of the longest historys in the world and has been inhabited for over 3,000 years.
We recommend you park the car outside the city and use the public transport to get around and see top attractions like the Acropolis, the ancient fortified town where the Parthenon is to be seen. You could also visit the National Archaeological Museum (the largest and most popular museum in the city) and the Byzantine Museum.
Greece Car Hire Tip: In Greece you drive on the right hand side of the road.
Piraeus is the city’s main port and is about 11km southwest of central Athens. It is said to be the biggest port in Europe and the 3rd biggest in the world! From Piraeus you can take your car hire by ferry to different Greek Islands like Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Zakynthos, Rhodes and Paros.
Drive the stunning Apollo Coast, which runs from Piraeus to Cape Sounion – about 70km south of Athens on Route 91. Cape Sounion is where you’ll see the famous Greek Temple of Poseidon, which was built about 444BC about the same time as the Parthenon.
Greece Car Hire Tip: It is illegal to use your mobile when driving in Greece.
If you head west of Athens on the E94 highway in the direction of Corinth, you’ll pass the Corinth Canal which separates the Peloponnese Pennisula with mainland Greece. As you enter the peninsula you’ll pass through the ancient city of Corinth, which was founded about 6,000 BC. Here you can see the spectacular Temple of Apollo.
With a car, it’s highly recommended that you visit Mycenae (a UNESCO world heritage site), which can be found 48km south of Corinth. Mycenae was one of the main centres of civilisation in Greece during the 2nd millennium BC. What you’ll see here is the ruins of palaces on the acropolis and ruined walls which are much older than most of the monuments in Classical Greece.
Greece Car Hire Tip: Usually the speed limit is 50km/hr in built up areas, 110km/hr outside of cities and 120km/hr on motorways.
Travel onto Sparta – once known for being a military state with one of the best armies in the Greek world. A major attraction in Sparta is the Temple of Artemis Orthia – it was here that young Spartan men would receive brutal public floggings. Or visit the Acropolis and Ancient Theatre, which was at one time, the largest in Greece with a capacity to hold up to 16,000 people.
Also on the Peloponnese Pennisula you could visit Nafplion and you’ll definitely see one of the most beautiful cities in Greece! Nafplion was once the capital of Greece and today is one of the major tourist destinations – especially if you’re looking for sun, sea and sand. The city has a beautiful coastal setting, narrow streets and lots of attractions like the Museum of Nafplion, the Peloponnese Folklore Foundation and the The Palamidi Fortress – one of the country’s greatest attractions.
By following the National Road Corinth – Athens you’ll end up back in Athens or if you’re travelling on to Olympia travel along the mountain road from Kalavrite or along the coast via Patras and Pyrgos. The historic city of Olympia hosted the first Olympic Games. There is an interesting museum here and also the famous Temple of Zeus, which was once the home to the statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Greece Car Hire Tip: It is illegal to use the car horn in built up areas except in the case of an emergency.
About 180km north of Athens is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Greece, Delphi. This trip to Delphi comes highly recommended and can be done in a day if staying in Athens. In ancient times, Delphi was a very special place, so special it was said, that it was centre of the world and a place where heaven met earth! Delphi has long been associated with the God Apollo and this was where people would flock to worship him. Explore the famous Oracle and a collection of temples like the Sanctuary of Appollo, Temple of Pronaia Athena and the Theatre where chariot races were common place.
For the ski enthusiast, the slopes of Mount Parnassus which are over 8000 feet lie between Athens and Delphi and from December to April are extremely popular for skiing.
Greece Car Hire Tip: Try to avoid driving in Athens – it suffers from severe congestion, roads are confusing and trying to find a parking space is next to impossible!
A drive to the vibrant Greek city of Thessalonika from Athens is quite a pleasant experience, and although the two cities are about 500km apart, they’re connected by one of the best highways in the country. Thessalonika is the second largest city in Greece, and like most Greek cities it has its fair share of archaeological attractions and ruins. It’s a vibrant city so if it’s good Greek cuisine, fine wines and beers and a rip roaring nightlife you’re after, then this is the place for you!
If you’re up for a challenge then head for Mount Olympus, which is located south of the city on the E45. It’s the highest point in Greece and was believed to be the place where the ancient Gods lived!
Hope this gives you an idea of what to see when driving in Greece. Remember you can also hire a car in the popular Greek Islands of Corfu, Crete, Rhodes and Mykonos. So for a relaxing and casual look at beautiful Greece, get a good map and take to the road.
Mairead Foley writes for http://www.Novacarhire.com/ where you can book car hire at airports, ferry ports, rail stations, cities and towns all over the world.
