U.S. attorneys’ independence at center of controversy


WASHINGTON - Former Attorney General John Ashcroft had a standard spiel for new U.S. attorneys: “You have to leave politics at the door to do this job properly.”

Judge orders release of pipeline records
The state Utilities and Transportation Commission must immediately release oil and natural gas pipeline mapping information to several of the state’s newspapers, a judge ruled Friday, saying the information was not exempt from the state’s public disclosure law.

Gonzales apologizes to attorneys, names new chief of staff
WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales apologized to the nation’s 93 U.S. attorneys in a conference call Friday as he tried to hold on to his job amid the scandal over the firings of eight federal prosecutors.
